Dental Filling

If you have a cavity, a dental filling may be the treatment of choice to ward off future infection or discomfort. In this procedure, any decayed tooth structure is removed and replaced with a tooth colored composite material. This allows for your tooth to be infection free while also providing a natural appearance.

The same tooth colored composite can also be used to repair broken or chipped teeth, depending on the extent of damage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are dental fillings safe?

Dental fillings are considered safe by the ADA and FDA. Some have expressed concern with composite dental fillings containing Bisphenol A, or BPA. The amounts of BPA in composite fillings are very low and no research has shown a relation between dental composite fillings and adverse health outcomes.

Amalgam dental fillings, or silver feelings are performed less often now but many patients still have them. Although also considered safe by the ADA and FDA, some have expressed concern over the presence of mercury in amalgam fillings. If you already have an amalgam filling, it is safe to leave it alone. Dental fillings should only be replaced when they have broken or cracked.

How do I know if I have a cavity?

Cavities and tooth decay can often be spotted at home. You may experience

  • Pain in teeth that may increase when you bite or chew
  • Tooth sensitivity when consuming hot, cold or sweet foods and beverages
  • Noticeable pits or holes in teeth
  • Brown, black or white spots on teeth

Some cavities form between teeth and may not be painful. Dental x-rays are used to observe cavities that otherwise may not be able to be seen.
